چکیده

Redband trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss gairdneri) migrations were tracked between March 2007 and June 2009 in the Donner und Blitzen River, Oregon, USA, using radio telemetry and PIT tags. We investigated the upstream extent and timing of spawning migrations for two groups of trout, considered the factors that influenced the rate of trout migration and explored the seasonal patterns of redband trout migration related to temperature and flow conditions. We found that trout made longdistance migrations (up to 91 km) to spawn. Spawning trout from the lower river and middle river migrated to the same reaches, but lower river trout reached spawning habitats later than individuals from the middle river. Migration rate had a positive relationship with fork length and mean river discharge. We also found that redband trout made upstream spring migrations as sub-adults and as adults. Whereas adult trout migrated to spawn, immature individuals migrated to river segments with more favourable thermal conditions. In both cases, migrations occurred where seasonally appropriate or life-stage-specific habitat patches for growth, survival, or reproduction were spatially segregated. M. Anderson, G. Giannico, S. Benchmarks and Patterns of Abundance of Redband Trout in Oregon Streams: a Compilation of Studies

—This work summarizes pre-1998 studies of population abundance of stream resident redband trout Oncorhynchus mykiss ssp. in Oregon, and compares basin-level surveys of habitat and fish populations in streams of two ecoregions. Interquartile values of density and biomass were used to develop benchmarks of high, moderate, and low abundance. Comparison among Crooked River streams (Blue Mountain ec...

Landscape-Level Sampling for Status Review of Great Basin Redband Trout

—In response to a petition to list Great Basin redband trout (subspecies of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss) as threatened or endangered, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conducted a status review in 1998. To support that review, we conducted a survey of the abundances of redband trout in each of six subbasins of the Great Basin that included the states of Oregon, California, and Nevada. We...

Effectiveness and Applicability of EMAP Survey Design in Status Review of Great Basin Redband Trout

Extended Abstract—The redband trout Oncorhynchus mykiss ssp. occurs in interior basins of the Pacific Northwest. Oregon’s Great Basin populations of redband trout persist in fragmented habitats that are a result of the area’s geologic history, more recent hydrologic cycles of flood and drought, and anthropogenic disturbance. Concern about the status of these fish prompted the development of a n...

Seasonal Movement and Distribution of Fluvial Adult Bull Trout in Selected Watersheds in the Mid-Columbia River and Snake River Basins

From 1997 to 2004, we used radio telemetry to investigate movement and distribution patterns of 206 adult fluvial bull trout (mean, 449 mm FL) from watersheds representing a wide range of habitat conditions in northeastern Oregon and southwestern Washington, a region for which there was little previous information about this species. Migrations between spawning and wintering locations were long...

Microsatellite diversity and conservation of a relic trout population: McCloud River redband trout.

Rainbow trout native to the McCloud River, California, USA (Oncorhynchus mykiss stonei) are thought to represent a relic, nonanadromous trout adapted to harsh, fragmented environments. These fish, commonly named McCloud River 'redband' trout, survive in their most primitive form in a small, spring-fed stream, Sheepheaven Creek, in the upper McCloud River drainage. Turn-of-the-century fisheries ...
